Nease grad Tyler McCumber makes cut, heads to weekend in 1st Players
Tyler McCumber plays a shot on the 14th hole during the second round of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass on March 12, 2021 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Tyler McCumber had a stellar second round at The Players Championship on Friday and made the cut in his first appearance in the tournament. But McCumber wanted his next memory to be of him actually competing in The Players Championship. McCumber and Nease won the Class 2A state championship in 2007. Bartram Trail’s Julian Suri, also a current professional golfer, won back-to-back individual state championships during that time. And being in the gallery when Funk won, McCumber knows the pride that locals feel when a hometown golfer succeeds.
Sam Burns builds 5-shot lead at halfway point at Riviera
(AP Photo/Ryan Kang)LOS ANGELES – Sam Burns wanted to pay respect to tough Riviera by playing it safe. He chipped it about 10 feet short — anything too strong could lead to big trouble — and made the par putt. “Whenever we were kind of in a tricky spot, just kind of took what the golf course gave us,” Burns said. “I feel like I'm playing really well. “There's a lot of good players — really, really good players.
Garcia tied for lead going into final round in Mississippi
He was the first to post at 14-under 202, a lead that held until Garcia caught him, and J.T. He also is enjoying himself, even when putts that look like they're going in stay out. “We love to make every putt we look at — or not look at, in this case — but we know that's not going to happen,” Garcia said. Staked to a two-shot lead going into the weekend, he had three bogeys on the front nine before he hit a hybrid from 255 yards to 15 feet for an egle on the 11th hole. Not since that 2017 Masters has he had at least a share of the 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour.
