A tropical wave located about 900 miles east of the Windward Islands in the central tropical Atlantic is producing a large area of showers and thunderstorms.

A tropical low-pressure system is expected to bring rain and storms to Jacksonville and surrounding areas this afternoon as The Weather Authority tracks its path across Florida and into the Gulf.

As the disorganized system continues to move towards the southeastern coast of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center has updated Tropical Depression Two to Tropical Storm Barry.

Mild temperatures will land us in the 60s

While most of the weather talk has shifted to winterlike temperatures and whistling winds, the tropics continue to make waves.

The tropics are starting to pick up for the hurricane season. The Weather Authority is currently tracking two tropical systems, one east of the Bahamas and another in the southwest portion of the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center gives this a 60% chance of developing over the next two days and a 60% chance of developing off the Florida coast over the next five days.

That brings us to the next possible storm system. Designated 92L by the National Hurricane Center this large but organized system continues to swirl its way westward towards the Leeward Islands. If this develops as expected it would become the ninth tropical depression of the season and Tropical Storm Isaias. An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system this afternoon and will provide more information about the current state of the disturbance. Regardless of development, locally heavy rain is likely across portions of the Lesser Antilles beginning later today and continuing through Wednesday, especially in the Leeward Islands.
