Police search for truck after teen hit, killed on SR-312

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A 16-year-old boy was hit and killed on State Road 312 in St. Augustine and his body was discovered Tuesday morning by a woman on a bicycle, police said.

St. Augustine police said it was a hit-and-run crash. The woman who found the boy's body said she first spotted a broken skateboard in the grass, then saw a backpack and then found the boy along the side of the road near U.S. 312 and Plantation Island Parkway. He was about 20 feet off the roadway, police said.

The woman told police she checked the boy's pulse, but he was cold to the touch, and she dialed 911.

Police said preliminary investigation shows the crash happened Monday night.

The victim's name has not been released. Friends told News4Jax that they will be holding a vigil for the teen at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the little park across from the Alligator Farm on Anastasia Boulevard in St. Augustine.

"He has a lot of friends. And the thing about that is we are one tight community, so what happens to one person, it happens to all of us. And we are all a family. It affects us in a lot of ways and we're all coming together," his friend B.C. told News4Jax Wednesday.

Police said they are looking for a 2003 to 2007 Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra (similar to one pictured) that is missing a black passenger-side mirror and may have damage to the right side of the truck.

Anyone who sees the truck or knows where it is is urged to call St. Augustine police at 904-825-1070 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 1-888-277-8477.
