JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The heat and humidity will continue to build across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia this week. In fact, temperatures could come close to record levels. When you factor in the humidity it feels much warmer. Let’s discuss the heat index and some tips to stay safe during the heat.

The heat index is a measure that combines the air temperature along with the humidity to determine what it “feels like” outside. Here’s how it’s calculated.

Heat index formula. (NOAA)

This long and complex equation is what is used to calculate the number you see on the map. You might wonder though when the temperature has the most impact on the body.

Notice how the likelihood of heat disorders with prolonged exposure or strenuous activity increases as humidity and temperature rise.

When the body gets hot, it begins to sweat to cool itself off. If the sweat is not able to evaporate, the body cannot regulate its temperature. This leads to serious health related problems.

Heat classification. (NOAA)

Notice on the chart the effect on the body as the heat index climbs. While 90s are common in Georgia and Florida during the summer, the higher humidity plays a big toll on the body.

High temperature forecast.

High temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 90s through the weekend. The average high for our area is 92 degrees.

Heat index forecast.

The heat index will approach if not exceed 105 degrees during this period.

Heat safety when working.

If you are working outdoors, make sure to stay hydrated and take regular breaks to rest. Seek periodic breaks in the AC if possible and make sure to spend time in the shade when outdoors.

Heat exhaustion safety.

Remember, sweat evaporation slows down when the humidity is high. Wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing can help.

Car temperature chart.

Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle.

The temperature inside of your car increases rapidly. If the air temperature is 90 degrees, in just 20 minutes your car reaches 115 degrees. in One hour you car reaches around 130 degrees.

A child’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult’s.

Temperatures will likely stay above normal as we head into the
