The system could acquire some subtropical or tropical characteristics as early as today or early Sunday as it tracks east-southeastward at 10 to 15 mph toward Portugal and northwestern Spain.
Any window for development, however, appears brief. Forecasters say the opportunity for tropical or subtropical development should close by Sunday night, when the system is expected to encounter unfavorable environmental conditions.
