Jacksonville police ID man killed in Majestic Plaza Apartments shooting

Neighbors outraged over deadly violence in Moncrief area

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police have identified a Jacksonville man killed in a shooting Saturday evening in the Moncrief area.

Officers received a call about 8:15 p.m. about a shooting at the Majestic Plaza Apartments on West 36th Street off Moncrief Road.

Officers arrived to find a man who had been shot and killed. On Friday, police identified him as 19-year-old Raymond Jerome Jones Jr.

The fatal shooting was the latest in a string of violent crime in the area, and neighbors said they are outraged that the killings never seem to stop.

"I heard about it because one of my neighbors said go up in the house.  Because they're shooting up there," said Cassandra Fullard, who lives in the apartment complex.

Others, such as Donnell Moultry, weren't home when the shots were fired.

"I was gone all day yesterday, so I got the news kind of late," Moultry said.

Moultry and Fullard said the deadly shooting is not the first act of violence in their neighborhood.

"One of the neighbors had got her car shot up six times and another neighbor had got her car shot up twice," said Fullard.

Both said they are frustrated and frightened over what goes on in the Moncrief area.

"If I were to have my own kids in my apartment, my place, then what about them? And these people got security guards then, what about them?  What are you paying them for?" asked Moultry.

Willie Turner owns a car wash one block away from the Majestic Plaza Apartments. He said he tries to disperse crowds before trouble starts.

"If I see anything go on, I get them out of here," said Turner.

Now police are hoping someone calls them if they know anything about who shot and killed the victim Saturday night.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call JSO at 904-630-0500. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS (8477).
