Police: Shooting death of woman, 26, possibly accidental

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The shooting death Tuesday evening of a 26-year-old woman was possibly “accidental in nature,” the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

According to Sheriff’s Office, the shooting was reported at 8:30 p.m. at a home on Mecca Street, north of the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, in the Grand Park neighborhood. Police said the woman was shot in the head and taken to a hospital, where she died.

A relative identified the woman as Angelica Monique Byers, who was a mother.

Police said they detained “somewhere between five and 10 people” to be interviewed, and there are no persons of interest still out there.

The Sheriff’s Office said it’s still early in the investigation, but based on initial information, “there is a possibility the shooting was accidental in nature.”

Family standing outside the home on Wednesday asked for privacy at that time.

A woman was shot in the head on Mecca Street and later died, police say.
