The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a man in his late 30s was riding a sport-bike-style motorcycle. Officers said for reasons unknown he left the road and hit a utility pole and a rock wall. He was taken to the hospital where he died.

The second accident happened a little over an hour later on Beach Boulevard.

JSO said a man was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle east on Beach Blvd. approaching the Southside Boulevard intersection.

A GMC pickup truck failed to yield while making a left turn from the gas station onto Beach Blvd. and hit the motorcyclist who died at the scene, JSO said.

A passenger in the truck was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver remained on the scene and was cooperating with the police.

Officers are looking into speed and impairment as possible factors in the crash.

JSO is encouraging any witnesses who did not speak to police at the scenes of the crashes to contact the JSO Traffic Homicide Unit.

The incidents mark the 144th and 145th traffic fatalities in Duval County this year, and a total of 33 involved a motorcycle.
