Waited until the last minute to file your taxes? Here are your options

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The deadline to file taxes is Monday at 11:59 p.m., and there are some options for those who waited until the last minute to complete them.

The Internal Revenue Service said about 90 million people have filed their taxes. But that leaves about 40 million taxpayers who haven’t done so.

If you’re one of the millions of Americans who have procrastinated on your taxes, there is a way to get some breathing room.

First, check if you qualify for an extension.

The IRS grants extensions to anyone who works or lives in a federally declared disaster area.

The IRS has also given an extension to individuals and businesses affected by the October 7 terrorist attacks in Israel.

But if you are not in any of those situations, you can ask for a six-month extension.

You’ll need to submit a Form 4868, that automatically gives you until October to file.

Keep in mind that this is only an extension to file your return. It is not an extension to pay the balance you owe. That amount is still due on April 15.

Visit the IRS website to explore additional available options.
