The samba schools are community institutions, and the parades are just one detail of all that,” Luiz Antonio Simas, a historian who specializes in Rio’s Carnival, said in an interview. As the number of infections grew, the samba schools that participate in the glitzy annual parade halted preparations for the 2021 event. A Carnival cruise ship came to the rescue of a Jacksonville-bound boat this week, according to Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival Legend was off the coast of the Bahamas on Tuesday when its crew responded to a call for help from a catamaran that had run out of fuel. The cruise ship delivered 25 gallons of diesel to the boat so it could make its way back to Jacksonville.

Three cruise ships carrying more than 100 people with flu-like symptoms are heading to Florida, the cruise lines said. Two Costa ships are headed toward Miami with about 30 crew members on board with influenza-like symptoms, Roger Frizzell, a spokesman for parent company Carnival cruises said Thursday. In total, more than 1,000 crew members are on board the ships, but no passengers. All ports along the Zaandam's route are closed to cruise ships. There are 586 crew members on board.
