Jags on verge of tying another franchise record for futility
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The last time the Jacksonville Jaguars lost nine consecutive games, owner Shad Khan fired coach Gus Bradley before they left the stadium. Jacksonville (1-8) dropped its eighth straight at Green Bay on Sunday and can match the longest, single-season skid in franchise history against unbeaten Pittsburgh. “All I know is we’re putting everything in this thing and we’re fighting our butts off,” Marrone said. But the end results might not be enough to save Marrone and Caldwell, who have dropped 19 of their past 28 games. KEY NUMBER8 — number of consecutive games Jacksonville has with at least one turnover, coinciding with its losing streak.
Jaguars place veteran RB Chris Thompson on COVID-19 list
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars placed veteran running back Chris Thompson on the COVID-19 list Saturday. The Jaguars (1-5) activated running back Devine Ozigbo from the injured reserve/designated for return list. Jacksonville also utilized its two practice squad elevation spots on safety Doug Middleton and tight end Eric Saubert. The team ruled out safety Jarrod Wilson (hamstring) and tight end Tyler Eifert (neck) a day earlier. Middleton and Saubert will revert to the practice squad Monday without having to clear waivers.
Gostkowski kicks 49-yarder as Titans beat Jaguars 33-30
(AP Photo/Wade Payne)NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Titans know good teams win ugly games, and being 2-0 for the first time in 12 years has a way of making any victory look much prettier. Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 49-yard field goal with 1:36 left, and the Tennessee Titans remain undefeated after holding off the Jacksonville Jaguars 33-30 Sunday. It’s exciting to get the win and get the Titans to 2-0.”Quarterback Ryan Tannehill said Gostkowski came up huge for the Titans on something that wasn't a chip shot. “Excited to be 2-0 for the first time here in Tennessee," third-year Titans coach Mike Vrabel said. So the Titans turned to Tannehill, the quarterback who led the NFL in 2019 with a 117.5 passer rating.
Jaguars place RB Ozigbo on IR, sign Ogunbowale to fill spot
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars placed running back Devine Ozigbo on injured reserve with a left hamstring injury Thursday and signed former Tampa Bay running back Dare Ogunbowale to fill his roster spot. Ogunbowale could be in uniform for the team's opener Sunday against Indianapolis since Jacksonville has little depth at the position. The Jaguars waived Leonard Fournette last week, put Ryquell Armstead on the COVID-19 list for the second time in five weeks and then lost Ozigbo in practice Wednesday. That left them with undrafted rookie James Robinson, third-down back Chris Thompson and fullback Bruce Miller available. Another undrafted rookie running back, Nathan Cottrell, could be called up from the practice squad.
Jaguars roster analysis: Young, inexperienced, lacking stars
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jaguars set their roster at 53 after making cuts Saturday. One thing is clear, whether you call it a rebuild, blowing up the roster, or a youth movement, this is a very young team, one that needs stars to emerge in 2020. Add to that eight players who were rookies last year, and the Jaguars have 24 players out of 53 who have played one year in the NFL or fewer. Im a firm believer that if you have a young quarterback and in our case, we do have a young quarterback and Gardner Minshew. On a Monday, I would obviously go to the roster, and I would start with the secondary, Brunell said.
Washington releases Adrian Peterson, turns to young backs
Washington released veteran running back Adrian Peterson on Friday, a stunning move by first-year coach Ron Rivera in the name of getting younger. Rivera called Peterson early in the morning asking him to come to the practice facility, then delivered the news the team was moving on from the 35-year-old star. Peterson played the past two seasons with Washington, rushing for 1,940 yards and 12 touchdowns in the fourth stop of a career that will likely earn him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Now, after Guice's release following a domestic violence arrest, he, Peterson and longtime third-down back Chris Thompson are all gone, and the backfield has a decidedly young look. This is a very talented, gifted young man that did a lot of different things, Rivera said Thursday.
Former Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette headed to Buccaneers
Leonard Fournette is headed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after reaching an agreement in principle with the team on Wednesday night. Fournette went from arguably the NFLs worst team to perhaps a Super Bowl contender in the matter of three days. #Bucs are giving RB Leonard Fournette a 1-year deal worth a max value of $3.5M, source said. Plus, with no off-sets from his #Jaguars deal, Fournette can double dip if he wins his grievance & add $4.2M. Jacksonville drafted Fournette fourth overall in 2017 in front of a slew of players who turned out to be stars and wound up getting nothing in return for him.
With Leonard Fournette gone, who steps up at RB for Jaguars?
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. No more Leonard Fournette means that quite a few players that Jaguars fans likely arent too familiar with are in line to replace him. A veteran, two second-year players and a pair of undrafted free agents are the players who are vying to replace Fournette. Chris is a blessing and Im happy as [heck] that hes here, said Jaguars running backs coach Terry Robiskie. The Jaguars picked him up after training camp last season. Now in his first training camp with the Jaguars, Ozigbo has gotten a chance to showcase his skills in Jay Grudens offense.
Former Jaguars RB Fournette clears waivers, now a free agent
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Leonard Fournette is now a free agent. He also reported that Fournette has filed a grievance against the Jaguars for voiding the guarantees in his contract. Jacksonville wouldnt have to pay that if that is upheld, but would have to pay it should Fournette win that. With Fournettes release, Ryquell Armstead, Nathan Cottrell, Devine Ozigbo, James Robinson and Chris Thompson are the running backs on the Jaguars roster. Jaguars running backs coach Terry Robiskie said on Tuesday that those players benefited from having Fournette in the mix.
What is going on in Duval? Reaction to the release of Leonard Fournette
Former Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew asked the question of the day Can anyone tell me what is going on in Duval? How do you draft a player top 5 and cut him 3 years later? Can anyone tell me what is going on in Duval? #Jaguars Josh Scobee (@JoshScobee10) August 31, 2020The biggest issue stemming from the Fournette release is that the Jaguars received nothing in return for him. According to coach Doug Marrone, the Jaguars did their best to deal Fournette, but couldnt even get a Day 3 draft pick in return. #Truth barstoolsports #BarstoolPrime Im https://t.co/KNU0ttARS5 Deion Sanders (@DeionSanders) August 31, 2020The Jaguars running back room is lean on experience now.
Former FSU star Chris Thompson navigating new team, fatherhood amid pandemic
Running back Chris Thompson has played his entire seven-year professional career with Washington, but now, the former Florida State Seminoles star is excited to be coming back to the Sunshine State. You know, being the new guy in the locker room, this is a super-important time right now to be able to get to know those guys, Thompson said. I was getting phone calls from Jacksonville as soon as we opened up, but they wanted to know, of course, if I was healthy, Thompson said. Gruden is now the offensive coordinator for the Jaguars and Thompson knows what Gruden wants his offense to look like. As for Thompson, hes not getting much sleep right now thanks to his 4-month-old daughter at home.
