Johnson's tears for a green jacket and major validation

Johnson grew up about an hour away in South Carolina, and the Masters is the one major every Southern kid dreams about winning. Johnson already had become owner of a label not talked about enough: The best player to have only one major. He went from a 12-foot eagle putt for the win to a three-putt par to finish one shot behind. And then he delivered the key shot, an 8-iron down the slope to a pin tucked on the corner shelf. It will be the shortest time any Masters champion gets to keep the green jacket with him.

No spectators means no roars, the magic of the Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The roars were endless Sunday at the Masters, coming from everywhere for just about everyone. Woods, who started that final round seven shots out of the lead, now was tied for the lead. Those were Nicklaus roars,” Woods said. And when the roars are for Nicklaus or Palmer, Woods or Mickelson, it's a different decibel. It was my first Masters, I remember being on the back nine, the roars and cheers, they were six deep on either side.”And then his thoughts turned to November, an autumn Masters.

Zach Johnson, normal guy from Iowa, wins Payne Stewart Award

He won as a rookie and reached the Tour Championship in Atlanta, where one of the perks was attending a ceremony to watch Jay Haas accept the Payne Stewart Award. It brought Johnson to tears 16 years later when he was selected Wednesday to receive the Payne Stewart Award. As it enters its second decade, the award now is regarded as the most prestigious on the PGA Tour. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan referred to Johnson as a fearless underdog and a statewide hero in Iowa for his charitable work in his home state. Zach would say hes just a normal guy from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but in truth, he has one of the most compelling stories on the PGA Tour in the last 25 years, Monahan said.

Oak Hill last hosted the PGA Championship in 2013 won by Jason Dufner, while Tiger Woods won his fourth PGA Championship at Southern Hills in 2007. DIVOTSHilton Head has some of the smallest greens on the PGA Tour, and Abraham Ancer hit 65 out of 72 of them in his runner-up finish. FINAL REBUTTALFascinating stuff. CBS analyst Nick Faldo, watching Koepka tee off on the 18th hole and telling viewers he would listen to what Koepka had to say.

Tiger Woods played golf course in St. Simons Island with son Charlie

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Tiger Woods didnt play in the PGA Tours RBC Heritage last week but did spend time at the Frederica Golf Club on St. Simons Island, Ga., according to multiple reports. According to the Golf Channel, Woods and his son, Charlie, played the course last Saturday. According to the Golf Channel report, Woods traded text messages with St. Simons Island resident Davis Love III, and Love said that Woods enjoyed the island. He didnt compete in the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, SC, which is a quick drive from St. Simons. Woods wasnt in the field at The Players Championship in March after saying his back wasnt going to allow him to play.

Love returns from pandemic and a house that burned to ground

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. Davis Love III faced a different kind of adjustment when he returned to the PGA Tour this week at Hilton Head. Two weeks after golf was shut down because of the new coronavirus, his home at Sea Island burned to the ground. Love said it was emotional when he and his wife, Robin, packed for the RBC Heritage. I was like, I just dont have enough equipment to go play a PGA Tour event. So Im kind of going to go through that again, he said.

Chill vibe of Hilton Head hides urgency for PGA Tour players

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. The ambiance of Hilton Head doesn't change, a most peaceful setting among shade of oaks along the Calibogue Sound. Adding to the serenity this week is the absence of spectators for the second straight week on the PGA Tour. I need to have a few good weeks here to kick off this restart, but I haven't played a lot of golf, Johnson said. It was an eerie feeling for five-time champion Davis Love III, playing Hilton Head for the 31st time. But when the U.S. Open moved to September and the Canadian Open couldn't be played, there was room for Hilton Head.
