Rare earthquake registers in Florida
BREWTON, Ala. – No damage was reported after a weak earthquake occurred along the Alabama-Florida line Thursday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 3.8 quake happened just after 10 a.m. north of Mount Carmel, Florida. The location is a mostly forested area southwest of Brewton, Alabama. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said it hadn’t gotten any calls about damage, but some area residents reported feeling it in response to a question posed by the area National Weather Service office on its Facebook page. The quake occurred more than 6 miles beneath the surface, according to the Geological Survey.
Earthquake rattles those from Virginia to Georgia
The earthquake’s epicenter was in Allegheny County, North Carolina. The earthquake was also felt by those in southwest Virginia, Tennessee and as far south as Atlanta, Georgia. It was the largest earthquake to hit North Carolina since 1916, when a magnitude 5.5 quake occurred near Skyland, the National Weather Service said. Earlier Sunday morning, the USGS reported a 2.6 magnitude earthquake close by in Sparta, North Carolina. Caribbean earthquake felt in Hilliard, across nation
People in Miami, 440 miles from the epicenter of Tuesday’ Caribbean earthquake, felt the ground shake. Ground shaking caused tall buildings in Miami to shake as longer period earthquake ground waves traveled out away from the Caribbean. These slower waves travel along the perimeter of the Earth from the earthquake to the recording station. Each circle in the visualization represents earthquake recording stations and the color indicates the amplitude, or height, of the earthquake wave detected by the station’s seismometer. Blue represents downward ground motion, red represents upward ground motion, and darker colors indicate larger amplitudes.
Massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake centered between Cuba, Jamaica
HAVANA – A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck in the Caribbean Sea between Jamaica and eastern Cuba on Tuesday, shaking a vast area from Mexico to Florida and beyond, but there were no reports of casualties or heavy damage. The quake was centered 86 miles northwest of Montego Bay, Jamaica, and 87 miles west-southwest of Niquero, Cuba, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Dr. Enrique Arango Arias, head of Cuba's National Seismological Service, told state media that there had been no serious damage or injuries reported. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially warned that the quake could generate waves 1 to 3 feet above normal in Cuba, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Honduras, Mexico and Belize, but issued a later message saying the danger had passed. The quake also hit the Cayman Islands, leaving cracked roads and what appeared to be sewage spilling from cracked mains.
Magnitude 5.2 earthquake rocks Puerto Rico
GUANICA, PUERTO RICO – Another earthquake has hit the island of Puerto Rico, registering a magnitude 5.2 on Wednesday. More harm than good: Compassion is noble, but what does Haiti really need, 10 years after quake?
“Deep down, I know there was an element of trying to get a pat on the back,” Albert said. “That’s when they completely blew me away with their response.”What the community leaders essentially told Albert and Zelaya was this: Thanks for your efforts and compassion, but you actually did more harm than good. The experience was such an eye-opener that it led Albert and Zelaya to a greater purpose and mission. “That goes back to the negative aid that is undermining the natural development of the Haitian people,” Albert said. The two discovered that nearly 80% of Haitian teachers haven’t been properly trained, and 60% of kids dropped out of classes during elementary school.
