A wildfire near I-95 in Camden County has grown to about 600 acres and is about 15% contained Thursday morning after smoke billowing onto the highway forced officials to shut down the interstate for hours on Wednesday.

A brush fire burning near Newell Road and Eston Prescott Road in Charlton County remains approximately 102 acres and is 85% contained as of Sunday, according to the Charlton County Emergency Management Agency.

Heavy rain slowed the progress of two sprawling southern Georgia wildfires over the weekend, allowing crews to make some progress in containing the blazes that have destroyed more than 100 homes.

More than 5,000 acres continue to burn in the Highway 82 Fire in Brantley County, with at least 87 homes lost, and the Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that a curfew will be in place from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. in the affected area.

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. – Investigators are working to determine what caused a brush fire to spark near Golden Isles Parkway and Highway 99 in Glynn County Sunday morning. It grew to 150-acres before the blaze was contained, the Georgia Forestry Commission confirmed. Glynn County Fire Department said the agency was first called around 11:30 am., and more units were called as the fire grew. When you have dry brush like that it burns really fast and it looks spectacular,” said Captain Bobby Armstrong. The Georgia Forestry commission flew over the fire to track its movement.

ATLANTA - Georgia Power intends to rely more on solar power than in past years to deliver energy to homes and businesses. Its part of the companys long-range energy plan, which was approved recently by the Georgia Public Service Commission, WABE-FM reported. Under the plan, Georgia Power will close its coal-fired power plant near Rome, Georgia. It will allow the industry to continue to grow and expand, and I do see that adding resilience to rural communities, Public Service Commissioner Jason Shaw said. Georgia Power has proposed an increase in rates by about 7 percent.

FOLKSTON, Ga. – A Georgia state park inside the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is being closed to visitors as a wildfire burning in the swamp poses a growing threat. Leland Bass of the Georgia Forestry Commission said Stephen C. Foster State Park was closed to new visitors Friday, while campers already in the park were being allowed to stay until Saturday morning. A community meeting was held Friday evening in Charlton County so people who live near the fire could find out how forestry officials plan to keep them safe. According to forestry officials, trigger points have been set up, and if the flames reach them, they will evacuate the residents.
