Heritage Classic between Raines, Ribault more than just a baseball game
Itโs an early season baseball game with only bragging rights on the line. But Raines and Ribault playing under the lights at 121 Financial Ballpark and donning the jerseys of a team from the long-gone Negro Leagues is a big story. The makeup game between the two Northwest Jacksonville rivals โwhich was originally scheduled for Feb. 12 as a preseason scrimmage โ is now an actual regular season game. Thereโs been a renewed focus on the rich baseball history here. That was the same place where the Negro League Red Caps played for three years.

Girls basketball playoffs: Bishop Kenny edges Raines in OT thriller
Bishop Kenny girls basketball players celebrate their 60-55 overtime win over Raines in the Region 1-4A playoff opener on Thursday night. Bishop Kennyโs 60-55 overtime win over rival Raines headlined the opening round games. The Crusaders (18-9) knocked off Raines in the regional final a season ago to reach the state semifinals. Other winners on Thursday night included Oakleaf edging Lake Mary (66-63) for its first playoff win since 2016. AdIn its first playoff game since 2012, Jackson trounced Maclay 65-18.
Former Raines star Solomon Kindley relishes the chance to give back
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Solomon Kindley doesnโt remember how many times that they came back, but the point was delivered time and again with every former player that returned to Raines. He showed up with a carload full of laptop computers and gave them to Raines students. Kindley hand delivered 22 new Lenovo laptops to students at the school. โI got called out of class, I was like, โwhat do they need me in the office for?โ They were like, โitโs a surprise, itโs a surprise.โ And it was a great surprise. โThey came back and just inspired me,โ Kindley said of former Raines players who came back to the school, sometimes with gifts, but most times with just their presence.

Raines, Ribault to play in 2nd annual High School Heritage Classic at 121 Financial Ballpark
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ As part of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimpโs salute to Black History Month, the club will be hosting the second annual High School Heritage Classic exhibition game between Raines and Ribault high schools at 121 Financial Ballpark. The Raines and Ribault players will wear custom Jacksonville Red Caps uniforms in a tribute to the Negro Leagues team from 1938 to 1942. Throughout the exhibition game, there will be historical references to Negro Leagues players and teams. โPersonally, this is a dream come true,โ said Andrea Williams, the Jumbo Shrimpโs director of community relations. The Raines Vikings defeated the Ribault Trojans 8-4 in the inaugural High School Heritage Classic in February 2020.

Raines uses defense to crush Ribault in Northwest Classic
Raines and Ribault met in the 51st Northwest Classic on Saturday at Raines. The Vikings used six interceptions, including three by Kyree Hammond, to rout rival Ribault 44-20 in the 51st Northwest Classic on a picture-perfect afternoon at the Graveyard. A muffed kickoff pinned Ribault back at its own 3 on the next drive and Christian McNair intercepted Santana Jackson and walked into the end zone. A bad snap on a punt rolled out of the end zone and led to a safety. And Raines recovered a muffed punt by Ribault that set up a touchdown.

Five area products invited to NFL scouting combine
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Five players with area ties were among those invited to the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. The NFL released the final list of 337 players who were invited on Friday. Among those going to Indianapolis are three from Gateway Conference schools, Raines alums Solomon Kindley and Michael Pinckney, and White High product Javarius Davis. Glynn Academy graduate Deejay Dallas and Oakleaf graduate Shaquille Quarterman round out the list of players who were invited. The scouting combine is Feb. 23 to March 2.

Former quarterback at Raines & Ribault paralyzed after shooting
SALISBURY, N.C. โ A quarterback at a North Carolina college, who once played at both Raines and Ribault high schools in Jacksonville, has been paralyzed after a shooting in which at least six people were wounded during a party at a restaurant, police said. Livingstone College junior Ryan Williams, 21, of Jacksonville, Florida, was among the victims shot at a Salisbury restaurant early Sunday, said Salisbury police spokesman Greg Beam, who was cited by news outlets. Five other Livingstone students were wounded, and two of them were Williams' teammates, according to police. Three students from Catawba College, which is also in Salisbury, were also injured in the incident, police said. The officers were still outside when the shooting occurred, he said.

The Florida High School Athletic Association released its Week 10 playoff RPI ratings on Tuesday afternoon with only minor changes. Trinity closes its season at Raines on Friday and will lock up a playoff spot with a victory. 5 seed in the playoff bracket since Lee (.607) will win the district with a victory over one-win Gainesville. Golden Gala raises money, spirits during Northwest Classic week
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Its Rivalry Week between Raines and Ribault high schools in Jacksonville, which means the annual Northwest Classic. JACKSONVILLE, FLA - What a great week of football Week 7 turned out to be. It's a district game this season. They've been outplayed in just two games, Keystone Heights in Week 1 and Yulee in Week 2. High school football schedule takes a hit from Hurricane Dorian
JACKSONVILLE, FLA - Hurricane Dorian has scrambled up the high school football schedule across the First Coast. All games involving Duval County Public School teams were canceled or postponed, according to county athletic director Tammie Talley. About the only team that was able to salvage a scratched game was Trinity Christian, which lost its game against Ribault. Those follow a wave of changes a day earlier, 17 in all, that were either rescheduled or canceled. Its game this week at Savannah New Hampstead was scrubbed when the Savannah-Chatham County Public School District canceled school and athletic events through Friday.

High school football Snaps: What a wild Week 1 in the area
JACKSONVILLE, FLA - Week 1 of high school football is in the books and Ill throw out a few thoughts on the week in a Snaps notebook following games. The fact that the Tigers put up yards without much resistance (519, according to the Florida Times-Union) is telling. The Christians have been a state power for probably as long as anyone currently involved with high school football can remember. And Bolles is Bolles, owner of a state-record 11 championships. The Bolles icon won 466 career games, sixth-most in high school history, and he was honored with a special plaza during the game.

Pressure every year to carry on the Raines tradition
Theres pressure every year. The name across the front of the jersey Raines makes it that way. But after back-to-back state championships, Treyvon Hobbs said that the Vikings will use that pressure in a positive way and look to do the unthinkable and win three consecutive state titles.

Turning point for Raines football team came in 2013
Deran Wiley has back-to-back state championships at Raines and will go down as one of the most successful football coaches in area history. But before the Vikings found their rhythm, Wiley had to hit an emotional low as a coach. That came in 2013, a season that took such a toll on the young coach that Wiley didn't know if he wanted to continue. He did and the rest, as the cliche goes, is history.

Raines, Mandarin among teams opening high school football practice
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Monday was the first day high school football teams in the state of Florida could begin practicing. At Raines and Mandarin, the Vikings and Mustangs began fall practice as defending state champions. Mandarin held practice number one in the parking lot Monday morning. At Raines, the Vikings know what it's like to start the season as the hunted. "We're fully healthy at the quarterback position to start the season, which last year, we weren't.
