Walmart, Sam’s Club to close its stores on Thanksgiving Day

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Walmart will close its namesake stores and Sam’s Clubs on Thanksgiving Day this year, saying that it wants to have its employees spend time with their families during the coronavirus. The move marks the first major indication of how COVID will affect Black Friday store shopping, which for almost a decade kicked off with big crowds on the turkey feast and expanded into Friday. However, safety concerns are making stores rethink their plans for the holiday plans. Given Walmart’s clout as the nation’s largest retailer, other major retailers could very well follow its lead. Walmart also said Tuesday that it will be giving out another round of bonuses for workers on the front lines of the coronavirus.

The company was forced to close stores on March 18 because of the coronavirus outbreak, causing sales to plunge by as much as 45%, the company said Thursday. Kohl's said earlier this week that sales fell 43% last quarter, while sales at L Brands, the parent company of Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works, dropped 37%. Macy's began reopening stores on May 4 -- just a couple days after its first fiscal quarter came to a close. Macy's is limiting the number of customers allowed inside stores that are reopening and installing social distancing signs and markers. The company says it’s working: “With two weeks of results from reopened stores, customer demand is moderately higher than we anticipated,” Gennette said.
