It was a heartbreaking anniversary for Heidi Lynn Childs and David Lee Metzler, the sweethearts from Virginia Tech who were slain 10 years ago. Heidis mom, Laura Childs, choked up as she and her husband spoke at a local news conference about their daughter. She missed her sisters and her brothers high school and college graduation.Heidis sisters stood by, trying to contain their emotion. Heidi and David, who were 18 and 19 at the time of their murder, were sophomores at Virginia Tech. On Aug. 26, 2009, they drove up to an isolated spot in the Jefferson National Forest popular among Virginia Tech students.
Safety First: Researchers rank youth helmets for concussion protection
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - For years, the focus on football helmets and concussion safety has been at the NFL level, but now, there's new research on youth football helmets, courtesy of Virginia Tech's helmet lab. With the help of $3 million from the National Institutes of Health, the researchers at Virginia Tech tested every youth football helmet on the market. Bob Sefcik, executive director of Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program, said there's another critical safety factor parents need to double-check: How the helmet fits. "The schools individually purchase the helmets and I am sure they are looking at all of the technology that's available out there," Sefcik said. Sefcik said helmets are a big part of the safety solution, but they aren't the whole answer.

C&E Gun Shows Inc. announced the cancellation on its website and Facebook page and offered its condolences to the community. New Zealand's largest gun show was canceled in March after a gunman killed 51 people at two Christchurch mosques. Gun shows were also canceled in Las Vegas after the 2017 shooting at the Route 91 music festival.
Florida hoops team adds major transfer in Kerry Blackshear

The addition of Blackshear bolsters Floridas roster immensely and likely pushes the Gators into the top-10 conversation.
