Area stars shine as Bob Hayes track and field meet returns
Runners compete on Saturday at the Bob Hayes track and field meet at Raines. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ The Bob Hayes track and field meet was back, and so were a deluge of victories by area athletes. The Vikings relay team of Quincy Burroughs, Kareem Burke, Jaquon King and Kenton Kirkland clocked a 3:24.32 in the event to edge Miami Northwestern (3:25.75). Jeremiah Kollman (Richmond Hill), 44-0.75; 4. Miami Northwestern, 3:52.34.
High school basketball playoffs: All-local clashes headline second round
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ The path to the state semifinals in Lakeland continues for boys high school basketball teams this week. Eleven area teams are in action in the second round of the state playoffs on Tuesday night, including four all-local clashes. Region 1-7ABartram Trail (14-13) at Seminole (15-7): Not even a hint of difficulty for the Bears in their playoff opener, a 55-25 blowout of Lake Mary. The Bears have never been past the second round of the state playoffs, losing in their only two trips (2003, 2018). The Warriors hadnโt won a playoff game since 2013 until last weekโs 57-44 victory over Bishop Kenny.
Storm threatens Midwest with heavy snow, travel disruptions
Several coronavirus testing sites in Nebraska and Iowa were closing early Monday because of the snow. More than 10 inches (25 centimeters) of snow had already fallen in parts of eastern Nebraska by Monday evening. The agency said most roads in the area were covered with snow and heavy snow continued falling Monday afternoon. A major winter storm buried northern Arizona in snow on Monday while sending flurries to the outskirts of Las Vegas and Phoenix. Three to 6 feet (91 cm to 1.8 meters) of snow is forecast in the Sierra above elevations of 7,000 feet

Ten months into quarantines and working from home because of the pandemic, household petsโ lives and relationships with humans have in many cases changed, and not always for the better. โThe pandemic has brought us closer together.โDevika Ranjan, a theater director in Chicago, wanted pandemic company and got a rescue cat she named Aloo during the summer. The formerly feral cat is believed to be around 3, and seems to be very comfortable with a slow-paced, high-attention pandemic life. The pandemic hasn't been positive for all pets, though, such as those with owners who are struggling financially. However, Hedgis and other pet owners say they have become more than companions in recent months, that they provide valuable emotional support to their humans.
Virus shuts many UK theaters but online the show goes on

The Old Vic has mounted an โIn Cameraโ season of plays performed on its stage and broadcast online. Playwright Jack Thorneโs adaptation has been a hit at the Old Vic for the past three Christmases.
Nebraska to end nearly all social distancing restrictions
Pete Ricketts will end nearly all of his state's social-distancing restrictions on Monday even as the number of new coronavirus cases has trended upward over the last few months. โWe are loosening the restrictions further on Sept. 14,โ Ricketts said at a news conference. Nebraska will also allow smaller indoor facilities, such as bars, restaurants, churches, gyms and hair salons, to operate with no formal restrictions. For several days before that, the state's public health data system wasn't receiving results even though laboratories were processing tests. Nebraska ranks 15th highest in the rate of positive cases as of this week, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University.
Hundreds of Strangers Attend Funeral of Korean War Vet With No Known Family Left
Hundreds of people who'd never met Korean War veteran Dale Quick turned out to honor the 91-year-old at his Nebraska funeral. "I know the strong bond that Lincoln has with its veterans," Roper told InsideEdition.com Tuesday. Quick's great niece and about 300 strangers gave Quick a respectful send off at his funeral Monday morning.
