COVID-19 vaccination site to open at AMC Theatres in Yulee
A new COVID-19 vaccination site will open next week at the AMC Theatres on Lofton Square Court in Yulee, Nassau County Emergency Management Director Greg Foster announced Wednesday. Beginning Tuesday, March 30, nurses will be administering doses of the Pfizer vaccine by appointment only Tuesdays through Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. To get a shot, you must provide identification and complete the Florida Department of Healthโs COVID-19 Vaccine Screening and Consent Form. To streamline the process, Foster suggests printing and completing the form before your appointment and then bringing it with you. TRAFFIC ALERT: Police activity, crash causing delays on I-95 NB near Yulee
Police activity is causing backup on I-95 northbound near the Yulee exit. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Police activity involving about 20 law enforcement vehicles at one point caused major delays on I-95 northbound near the Yulee exit Saturday afternoon. Department of Transportation cameras showed what appeared to be two vehicles surrounded by officers before Fire and Rescue arrived on scene. Firefighters said no one was transported from the scene. The left lane remains blocked by police and emergency vehicles but traffic is flowing slowly.
Yulee man killed in Nassau County 3-car crash
NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. โ A 42-year-old Yulee man died Wednesday night in a crash involving three cars, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers said the driver of a pickup was traveling east on State Road 200 and approaching the intersection of Wildlight Avenue. According to FHP, the driver of the truck failed to stop, colliding with the rear of an SUV, which in turn collided with the other SUV. The driver of the SUV that was struck by the pickup died at the scene. The driver of the pickup and the driver of the other SUV both had minor injuries, FHP said.
Nassau County leaders scrambling to expand fire department amid population growth
NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. โ Nassau County is the fifth fastest-growing county in Florida, according to county officials, with new subdivisions going in all over the area. We received a few responses like these:โThe infrastructure/ services in Nassau County have not increased as the population has increased,โ wrote one commenter. So News4Jax reached out to Nassau County Fire Rescue, along with the Nassau County Department of Planning and Economic Opportunity. Rigdon said the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners has been helpful in providing the finances to accommodate the growth, but calls for service continue to increase. Head-on crash snarls US 17 on Tuesday morning
Two drivers were injured -- one serionsly -- in this crash on U.S. 17. YULEE, Fla. โ The drivers of a pickup truck and a car injured in a head-on crash on U.S. 17 just north of Duval-Nassau county about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. According to the Nassau County Sheriffโs Office, the driver of the pickup truck lost control and struck a car coming the other direction. The elderly driver of the pickup had only minor injuries. Northbound traffic on U.S. 17 was backed up to Pecan Park Road in Duval County.

Nassau County woman arrested after attempting to steal school bus
YULEE, Fla. โ A woman in Nassau County was arrested Friday night, accused of attempting to steal a school bus from the Nassau County School Board. Melissa Gail Lacey, 48, was found lying down on the floor of the bus which was parked in front of a house around 2:30 a.m., according to the Nassau County Sheriffโs Office. Homeowners found Laceyโs car in their driveway and, after discovering she was in the bus, told authorities she did not have permission to be in there. NCSO said the key was in the bus ignition and the airlock doors were pulled open. She was transported to the Nassau County Detention Facility.
Critically endangered black rhino Born at White Oak Conservation
YULEE, Fla. โ White Oak Conservation, a refuge for rare species in Northeastern Florida, announced the birth of a male black rhino on Wednesday. Photo: White Oak ConservationโMom has been great and protective, keeping him very close,โ Brandon Speeg, director of conservation at White Oak, said. As a result, black rhinos are now โcritically endangeredโ throughout Africa. White Oak provides a protected home in the northeast corner of Florida for three of the worldโs five remaining rhino species. Black rhinos from Zimbabwe were brought to White Oak in 1993 to start a breeding program in case the wild population was lost.
Defense seeking to have evidence in Kimberly Kessler case thrown out
YULEE, Fla. โ Four motions were filed Wednesday to suppress evidence in the case of Kimberly Kessler, the woman charged with killing her coworker at a hair salon in Yulee. Kesslerโs attorneys claim that Kessler was located through unlawful use of cellphone site technology, and that any evidence gathered as a result of the detention in St. Johns County should be suppressed. Her attorneys say that statements Kessler made to St. Johns County deputies should be suppressed because she was questioned before she was read her Miranda rights. They say statements she made at the St. Johns County Jail should also be suppressed, saying they were the fruit of an unlawful arrest. An emergency order from the Nassau County Sheriffโs Office in September requested guidance from a judge, saying Kessler was refusing to eat and wouldnโt accept any medical treatment.
Northeast Floridaโs 1st diverging diamond interchange challenges drivers
Itโs Northeast Florida first diverging diamond interchange. FDOT officials will be at the interchange Monday morning to monitor conditions through the first weekday rush hour. By moving traffic to the opposite side of the road, the interchange eliminates left turns in front of oncoming traffic and is supposed to greatly improve safety. โThe diverging diamond helps to eliminate conflict points," said FDOT spokesman Hampton Ray. Transportation officials said the interchange eliminates the number of traffic signal phases, improve efficiency at the intersection and reduces traffic queues.
