Jacksonville homicides in September


JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Of the nine homicides reported in Jacksonville in September, four were in the 32210 ZIP code of the city's Westside, which runs roughly from Old Middleburg Road (north) to 103rd Street (south).

Among those 32210 homicides was the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy behind a closed day care on Ricker Road. Another 14-year-old has been charged with manslaughter in his death.

Through September, News4Jax recorded 101 homicides in Jacksonville. Through the first nine months of 2016, there were 87 homicides in the city, according to our records.

There were 27 homicides reported in the first two months of 2017, another 18 in March and April, 13 in May, 23 in June and July, and 11 in August.

Tuesday, Sept. 5

Prince Mitchell, 26

Mitchell was found shot to death on Demper Drive near North Pearl Street in Jacksonville's Panama Park neighborhood. Police did not release any description of a shooter.


Thursday, Sept. 7

Liwanag Navarro, 71

Navarro was found murdered in a home on Majuro Drive in the Sandalwood area. Hector Batoon, 45, is charged with murder in her death. Police said it appears Navarro and Batoon knew each other.

Timothy AtkinsSaturday, Sept. 9

Timothy Atkins, 61

Atkins was killed in a home invasion robbery at on Headley Street in the Murray Hill area. No arrest has been made.


Tuesday, Sept. 12

Henry Atkins, 14

Henry was fatally shot at 4600 Ricker Road, behind a closed day care center. He died at the hospital. Three other teens were with him, and one of them, Christian Ashley, 14, has been charged with manslaughter and tampering with evidence in Henry's death.

Devin GauldinTuesday, Sept. 12

Devin Gauldin, 29

Gauldin was shot multiple times and killed at the Hilltop Apartments at 1646 West 45th St. in Northwest Jacksonville, police said. A witness told police two masked men approached Gauldin as he got out of his car and started walking toward a courtyard. They shot him multiple times and ran off. Police had no further details about the shooters.

Tyreak Wyche, 19

Wyche was killed at La Estancia Apartments at 5141 Shenandoah Ave. in the Biltmore area, police said. Investigators had no description of a shooter.

Gary Heath Tuesday, Sept. 19

Gary Heath, 25

Heath was found shot multiple times on Indian Lakes Drive on Jacksonville's Westside and later died at the hospital from his injuries. Police said the suspected shooter was a light-skinned black male with dreadlocks pulled back into a ponytail, wearing a black shirt and black gym shorts. No other information has been released.

Jakieme JohnsonSunday, Sept. 24

Jakieme Johnson, 30

Johnson was fatally shot and another person was injured in a double shooting on Susie Street on Jacksonville's Westside. Johnson died the next day. Several witnesses were helping police, who said the deadly gunshots followed a verbal altercation between two people. No description was released of a possible shooter, but police said the case is being worked as a justifiable homicide.

William ChrismanWednesday, Sept. 27

William Chrisman, 33

Chrisman, a military veteran, was shot and killed in the parking lot of the FlashDancers Gentlemen's Club on Blanding Boulevard, where he was working as a security guard, his family said. A fight inside the club continued outside and as the suspects drove away, they fired a weapon, hitting Chrisman, who later died at a hospital, police said. Police released surveillance images of the suspected shooters, but later said the case was being worked as a justifiable homicide.
