Residents concerned over sinkhole in Atlantic Beach

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – People in Atlantic Beach got a surprise on Christmas morning after they found a sinkhole in their apartment complex.

Resident said the sinkhole started opening up Thursday.

The hole is at the Deerfield Lakes Condominiums on Assisi Lane, which is near Mayport Road.

It's not clear what caused the hole to open up.

People said they had a trash can in the hole Thursday, but then it got so big that the trash can couldn't fit.

People are concerned, because the hole is close to where young children play.

“It worries me with the kids going around. A lot of kids go in here. I’ve seen on TV where they just open right up and swallow hole apartment complexes’ cars. That's why we're keeping an on the kids,” said  Kenneth Endenfield.

One person even decided to have some fun with the hole by putting this Christmas tree next to it.

Neighbors said they found a sidewalk closed sign and decided to move it nearby.

Many people told News4Jax they just want the hole to be repaired.

News4Jax reached out to the city of Atlantic Beach and JEA to find out who's responsible for fixing the hole, but has not heard back yet.
