Duval County School Board signs off on search for possible new headquarters
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ The Duval County Public Schools board voted unanimously in favor of a measure, brought by member Lori Hershey, to explore the relocation of the districtโs waterfront headquarters on the Southbank. The vote was taken Tuesday night, more than a week after the board discussed the proposal in a workshop. My preference, particularly in leadership, is to be in the driverโs seat versus responding,โ Hershey said in the workshop. With approval secured, the measure allows for the formal discussions to begin and for Superintendent Diana Greene to begin exploration and the drafting of a proposal. That proposal will likely be presented at a board meeting in March, according to Hershey.
Duval County school district leaders may soon be looking for a new home
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ The main office of Duval County Public Schools is in a convenient, central location of Jacksonville. But during a workshop last week, Duval County School Board member Lori Hershey said itโs time to consider making a move. โI totally agree with Ms. Hershey that now is a good time to explore that,โ said School Board member Warren Jones. School Board Vice Chairman Darryl Willie said: โThrough the chair, I could definitely get behind this resolution. A proposal is expected to be brought up at the next School Board meeting in December.
Americans load up on candy, trick or treat - or not

Thereโs no official word on Halloween in her city, but she plans to take her kids trick or treating and hand out candy.
Duval County 6th-graders back in classrooms full time
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Sixth graders in Duval County schools returned to the classroom full time Monday. Hybrid learning will come to an end for seventh and eighth graders next Monday and for high school students will return to school buildings on Sept. 28. Duval County School Board member Lori Hershey said the district has received mixed reaction to converting from a hybrid of online and in-person teaching to full-time education back in the classroom. Not only do the children need to be in school to not fall behind, but the district needs the money. โSchools and school districts are allocated based on student attendance, so the more students we have in our classrooms and enrolled in our schools, the more money that comes into the district,โ Hershey said.
Parent group calls for Duval public schools to require masks & postpone school year
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A newly formed group is calling on Duval County Public Schools to require masks in buildings, postpone the school year until after the Republican National Convention and many other changes to the districtโs reopening plan. The congregation of parents and stakeholders from around the Duval County School District formed the Duval Schools Pandemic Solutions Team on Friday and brought a litany of concerns to the school board during its special meeting Tuesday morning. On Tuesday, the School Board agreed to spend more than $4 million through the districtโs COVID-19 fund to purchase and install 120,000 desk partitions. RELATED: Duval school board approves plan to buy desk barriers for studentsThe congregation believes every grade level, including middle and high school, should have the full-time option to keep learning virtually. Additionally, the group believes middle and high school students should also have an option to be at school full-time, saying that school is a safe haven for many students in troubled homes.
