A group called Defend St. Augustine has more than 300 signatures on a petition to ask the commission to reconsider its decision to remove the stone honoring the citys Confederate war dead. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A woman is charged with child neglect after Jacksonville police said children were found living in an apartment covered in bugs, feces and old food. According to an arrest report, a woman, who News4Jax has chosen not to identify, found a toddler who had been wandering around by himself. All three children were taken to a hospital, where doctors found burns on at least one of the childrens legs, according to the arrest report. Police said Hunter eventually showed back up at her apartment and was arrested, and the children were taken away by the Department of Children and Families. News4Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson, who is a retired police officer and a father, was greatly disturbed by what he read in the arrest report.

Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, a public magnet school in Jacksonville named after local black civil rights activist, is creating a new advisory group to help improve the culture at the school after students came forward to share their experiences with racism. Students and alumni recently started sharing their stories with former student Jade Collins, 19, who then shared them in a Douglas Anderson Facebook group. Douglas Anderson was originally a black school NO one acknowledges that nor do they appreciate it and instead throw it under the rug, another post reads. Douglas Anderson School of the Arts was established in 1922 and was originally named the South Jacksonville School. He was best known for his efforts to provide transportation for black students, operating the only bus service for them in Duval County.
