South Lawn, Rose Garden under repair post-convention
Workers lay sod on the South Lawn of the White House, Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020, in Washington. The White House South Lawn and its iconic Rose Garden are undergoing extensive re-sodding and other work after last months Republican National Convention turned them into a muddy mess. The Rose Garden repairs come just weeks after the White House completed a major renovation of the garden intended, in part, to improve drainage issues. The day of her speech, Astroturf was placed over the garden lawn because it was deemed a swampy mess. Since the convention, the White House has avoided using the Rose Garden and South Lawn for public events.

As political conventions go virtual, so does the chatter
The pandemic has fundamentally reshaped this year's presidential election, prompting both parties to ditch their traditional arena-style conventions. Instead, what he mostly got in his social media feeds were posts from left-leaning friends, trolls and memes disparaging Republican convention speakers. In South Carolina, one grassroots Trump backer hosted mask-wearing fellow supporters at a watch party in Aiken County. But other Republicans like Emma Scott, a University of South Carolina junior, opted to keep their distance. Scott chairs the South Carolina Federation of College Republicans, which relied on Zoom calls or group messages to stay connected and discuss this weeks speeches.

Tillis campaign tweeted a picture of the first-term senator wearing a mask on the White House lawn on Thursday before Trumps speech. Convention-covering networks challenged by competing stories
Republicans decided the show must go on and, for the most part, television networks followed. The convention is taking place in the shadow of huge stories that are happening right now, CNN's Anderson Cooper said. Networks, after giving extensive coverage to the Democrats last week, are cognizant of being fair to the Republicans. The president has been showing up every night, the president could talk about it. But former Republican Sen. Rick Santorum, also a CNN contributor, said Republicans were there to try and reelect President Trump and that has to continue to remain their focus.

GOP's focus on Trump leaves scant room for Congress hopefuls
This isnt a party convention, its a Trump convention, said Rory Cooper, a Republican strategist and former congressional staffer who opposes Trump. Lobster fisher's pro-Trump speech sets off political spat
PORTLAND, Maine A Maine lobster fisher spoke in favor of President Donald Trump's trade policies during the Republican National Convention on Tuesday, earning a rebuke from the state's Democratic party, which faults Trump for hurting the industry. As long as Trump is president, fishing families like mine will have a voice, Joyce said. Maine Democrats said before Joyce's speech on Tuesday that Trump has done more to hurt the lobster fishery than aid it. Trump's trade hostilities with China have taken a valuable market away from the U.S. lobster industry, Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra said. GOP delegates open convention to renominate Trump for 2020
Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, delegates are holding an in-person meeting and roll-call vote in the ballroom of the Charlotte Convention Center before attention turns to prime-time programming. (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky, File)RALEIGH, N.C. North Carolina will ease gathering restrictions for the Republican National Convention in Charlotte this month after a push by the national party for the state to be more accommodating. The RNC has estimated it would have no more than 500 delegates per day at the Charlotte Convention Center and the Westin hotel. The back-and-forth between the state and RNC comes amid a months-long battle between Trump and North Carolina's Democratic governor.

No hoopla: Virus upends Trump, Biden convention plans
Ill probably do mine live from the White House, Trump said, but he also said it was not locked in. If I use the White House, we save tremendous amounts of money for the government in terms of security, traveling," he said. Biden has been on the convention stage twice as the vice presidential nominee for Barack Obama. Those kinds of effects and approaches could be repeated even without a traditional convention stage in an arena or stadium. Four years later, he walked out to a full outdoor stadium a remarkable scene in the annals of presidential conventions in Denver.

Trump considering giving convention speech from White House
WASHINGTON President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he's considering delivering his Republican convention acceptance speech from the White House in a move that would mark an unprecedented use of public property for partisan political purposes. Well, we're thinking about it, Trump said when the hosts of Fox News Channel's Fox & Friends asked whether he'd deliver a speech accepting his party's presidential nomination from the White House lawn. I think it's a great place, Trump said of the White House during a wide-ranging telephone interview. The Washington Post had reported that Republican officials were considering using the White House South Lawn to stage Trump's acceptance speech. Presidents historically have treated the White House as a politics-free zone, though Trump has shown disregard for many norms and customs of the presidency.

GOP: Renomination of Trump to be held in private
WASHINGTON The vote to renominate President Donald Trump is set to be conducted in private later this month, without members of the press present, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Convention said, citing the coronavirus. While Trump called off the public components of the convention in Florida last month, citing spiking cases of the virus across the country, 336 delegates are scheduled to gather in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Aug. 24 to formally vote to make Trump the GOP standard-bearer once more. If the GOP decision stands, it will be the first party nominating convention in modern history to be closed to reporters. Given the health restrictions and limitations in place within the state of North Carolina, we are planning for the Charlotte activities to be closed press Friday, August 21 Monday, August 24, a convention spokeswoman said. The subset of delegates in Charlotte will be casting proxy votes on behalf of the more than 2,500 official delegates to the convention.

Political leaders react after President Trump ends plans for RNC in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. President Donald Trump on Thursday scrapped plans for a four-night Republican National Convention celebration in Jacksonville that had been set to draw more than 10,000 people to a pandemic hot spot to mark his renomination. He also pointed to safety, something that resonates with a former Jacksonville sheriff -- Rep. John Rutherford, R-Florida, a member of the RNC Host Committee. You know, Northeast Florida was ready to show their magnificent support for President Trump, but, you know, as hes always done, it puts America first, Rutherford said. Critics of the president and of hosting the convention in Jacksonville are calling the decision overdue. I think the president made a better decision based on public safety, and I obviously always appreciate that, Rutherford said.

With RNC out, activists hope Mayor Curry focuses on removing Confederate monuments
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Now that the Republican National Convention has been pulled out of Jacksonville, some activists say it gives Mayor Lenny Curry time to focus on removing Confederate monuments from the city. On Friday, a group protested in front of City Hall urging the mayor to focus on a promise to remove the monuments. Its been over a month since the city removed a Confederate monument from Hemming Park. The city said it doesnt know when the Confederate monuments will come down but said that its working on a schedule with the Parks and Recreation Department. We were communicating our caseloads and hospitalizations to the president, White House, RNC. President Trump made the right decision yesterday, as we knew he would, in the best interest in the health of the people of Jacksonville, Curry said on Fox. Trump calls off Florida segment of GOP National Convention
Trump and his advisers feared that going forward with big parties and infomercial programming in Florida would ultimately backfire on the president. Trump said he plans to deliver his nomination acceptance speech in an alternate form still to be determined perhaps online. "Im grateful for him and his leadership, and this was the right way to move forward.Joe Gruters, current chair of the Florida Republican Party and a state senator from Sarasota, called it a selfless move." The Charlotte City Council voted in April to accept a $50 million federal grant for convention security. City Attorney Patrick Baker said the city had spent $14 million prepping for the convention so far but expected Charlotte to get reimbursed through the grant.

Groups opposed to city hosting RNC relieved after event in Jacksonville called off
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. President Trump announced Thursday evening that the Republican National Convention wont be held in Jacksonville, citing a flare up of COVID-19 cases in Florida. A group of 70 pastors wrote a letter to Mayor Lenny Curry, expressing grave concern over the city hosing the event. The moment Trump announced the RNC would be canceled in Jacksonville was a sigh of relief for activists like Michael Sampson with the March on the RNC Coalition. We dont want more folks who want to inflame and divide people in Jacksonville, Sampson said. The week the RNC was planned would have occurred on Ax Handle Saturday, a date that marks a racially motivated attack in 1960 in Jacksonville.

Now the focus for the city council is the city budget and the effect that COVID-19 will have on the bottom line.

President Trump cancels RNC in Jacksonville
Despite being told by his staff that planning for the Republican National Convention was going well and they were confident that they could pull it off safely, Trump said pulled the plug on the event. “There’s nothing more crowded than a convention,” Trump said. Trump moved parts of the GOP convention to Jacksonville last month amid a dispute with North Carolina’s Democratic leaders over holding an event indoors with maskless supporters. “My political team came to me and laid out our plans for the convention in Jacksonville, Florida. More than 10,000 people were expected in Jacksonville — already a fraction of the number that would typically attend a nominating convention.

COVID-19 changing the look of Democratic & Republican conventions
The are concerns about protests because, much like the RNC in Jacksonville, no one knows who will be coming and how many will participate. Its an entirely downscaled convention, said Bill Glauber of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, who has been covering politics for years. They expected a four day political extravaganza, and now the convention is going to be a fraction of the size. While the number of attendees will be much smaller than the number expected in Jacksonville, security there is still a big issue. Jacksonvilles plan for security will be discussed tomorrow during a special City Council meeting at 10 a.m. Friday.

Trump calls off Florida segment of GOP National Convention
WASHINGTON President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he has canceled segments of the Republican National Convention scheduled for Florida next month, citing a flare-up of the coronavirus. To have a big convention is not the right time," Trump said of Jacksonville. Trump moved parts of the GOP convention to Florida last month amid a dispute with North Carolinas Democratic leaders over holding an event indoors with maskless supporters. But those plans were steadily scaled back as virus cases spiked in Florida and much of the country over the last month. A small subset of GOP delegates will still gather in Charlotte, North Carolina, to formally renominate Trump on Aug. 24.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Mayor Lenny Curry said Tuesday he was not surprised that Sheriff Mike Williams warned Monday that the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office is not prepared to provide adequate security for the Republican National Convention. Williams was absent from Tuesdays news conference, and the question was posed to Undersheriff Pat Ivey: How many personnel will be needed to provide adequate security? For the security plan to be solid, you allot for those changes. An NFL football game crowd is a lot larger than whats going to be packed into the RNC convention arenas.
Curry: No talks about need for federal backup for RNC
We have had no conversations about the need for that type of a presence in our city, said Curry, who noted that Jacksonvilles police quelled violence and vandalism that unfolded briefly during last months unrest. The questions come as Oregon officials have spoken out against the presence and actions of federal agents in Portland. Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum alleged that federal agents arrested people off the street without probable cause. Mayor Ted Wheeler accused federal agents of escalating tensions in Portland, saying he wants them gone. More federal law enforcement, that I can tell you, the president said while taking questions in the Oval Office Monday.

It's Trump's call on what the GOP convention will look like
FILE - In this July 21, 2016, file photo Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump smiles as he addresses delegates during the final day session of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. After a venue change, spiking coronavirus cases and a sharp recession, Trump aides and allies are increasingly questioning whether its worth the trouble, and some are advocating that the convention be scrapped all together. Already the 2020 event has seen a venue change - to more Trump-friendly territory in Jacksonville, Florida, from Charlotte, North Carolina -- and it has been drastically reduced in scope. For technical reasons, the convention will be unable to formally adopt a new party platform. Despite the economic downturn, GOP officials insist they will have the financial resources needed to hold the convention.

Lawsuit argues GOP Convention is nuisance injurious to welfare of Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Residents and owners living near the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena -- where President Trumps renomination event is scheduled to be held in August -- have filed a lawsuit, asking a judge to declare the Republican National Convention a public nuisance. Defendants mentioned in the suit filed Wednesday included the City of Jacksonville, which is the owner of the arena, ASM Global, which manages and operates the arena, President Donald Trump and his campaign, and the Republican National Committee. The lawsuit states in part that the congregation of thousands in and around the arena in Jacksonville, under the circumstances and practices encouraged and required by the Republican National Committee and its leadership to be a nuisance injurious to the health, welfare and property rights of plaintiffs, in particular, and the health and welfare of the community of Jacksonville. The suit argues that the congregation of people in close proximity inside the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena will constitute a nuisance and result in massive spread of COVID-19 among those attending the event, unless restricted by the court. This is breaking news. Additional details to follow.

Board member: Duval schools not likely to move start date despite parents RNC concerns
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A board member with Duval County Public Schools said Friday that while leaders are aware of some concern among a group of parents and teachers in the district, its unlikely the start of the 2020-2021 academic year will be postponed. There are a lot of people concerned about the RNC (Republican National Convention) coming and what impact that might have on our community, District 7 board member Lori Hershey said. Hershey said moving the start of the school year would present logistical problems. There are so many options in place for parents if they prefer not to start the school year in the classroom, they have that option, Hershey said. So, think thats part of the reason for currently sticking with that with the date.
