Curious about high and low pressure systems? Let me explain... (.)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – High and low-pressure systems are something that I show on my weather map almost DAILY! They basically even out the unequal heating from the sun. They influence common weather patterns that your News4JAX meteorologists talk about all the time.

As meteorologists in Florida, we know the ins and outs of the “highs” and “lows” of weather across our area, due to numerous changes in atmospheric pressure.

but as a viewer, have you ever been curious as to why we talk so much about these highs and lows?

Basically, areas of “High Pressure” bring about dry, cool conditions. Here in Florida conditions even get COLD- but generally areas of high pressure help keep you cool, crisp and dry- and PUSH out thunderstorms. Speaking of thunderstorms- areas of “Low Pressure” bring about rain, storms, and nastier conditions.

It’s worth noting that high-pressure systems can bring about drought like conditions during the summer months, and arctic conditions in the winter months for different parts of the country. For us in Florida, we experience drier conditions and cooler conditions.

High-pressure systems are drawn on weather maps in a line with ridges. They move in, and they move out and that’s why the weather patterns change so often.

If you ever have questions about what these very specific systems do, email any of our meteorologists! We are here to answer your questions!
