Many Americans participating in 'Dry January'

People forgoing alcohol to start the New Year

VIDEO: It can start early, with even some 6th graders admitting to it. Florida young people find ways to get hold of alcohol and drugs. When it comes to businesses actually helping children get their hands on it, that's where law enforcement steps in. Channel 4's Kent Justice went undercover with St. Johns County Sheriff's deputies as they looked for restaurants that are not following the rules.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A new year usually motivates many people to curb a habit. For some, that habit may be  heavy drinking.

The hashtag "Dry January" has gotten more than 116,000 posts on Instagram.

Last year, more than 816,000 people in the United Kingdom participated in "Dry January." Eight months later, researchers found that the participants were still drinking less on average. 

The decline in drinking had multiple benefits, including better sleep, more energy, weight loss and a clearer complexion.
