Health Department promotes wearing blue to promote Men's Health Month

Duval DOH asks people to participate in 'Wear Blue Day' June 16

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health in Duval County is asking that people wear blue on June 16 before Father’s Day to help raise awareness of men's health.

June is Men’s Health Month. Director of DOH-Duval Kelli Wells M.D., said the gesture of wearing blue promotes healthy lifestyle choices and regular doctor’s visits.

“Men live sicker and die younger and recognizing Men’s Health Month raises the awareness of the importance of men’s health,” Wells said.

Duval County Men have higher rates of obesity than women, and more adult men have diabetes than women in Duval County. The teen suicide rate in men is 9.2 per 100,000, compared to 1.7 per 100,000 in females, according the the DOH-Duval.

The DOH-Duval insisted that men receive regular check-ups and know their blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels. Men should also have conversations with their doctor about healthy sexual behavior and their emotional health.
