Experts warn of increase in child burn injuries from hair styling products

The American Academy of Pediatrics is warning parents about an increase in injuries involving hairstyling products and children, especially among young children.

Research shows from 2013 to 2022 there were nearly 31,000 burn injuries from hair styling tools and more than 1,000 emergency department visits.

Hair curlers and curling irons accounted for 97% of those burn injuries.

Of those hospitalized, 68% were 10 years old or younger, and 65% involved girls.

Pediatricians recommend parents talk to their young children about the dangers of these products and stress age-appropriate use -- with and without parental supervision.
