JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A case of shigella has been confirmed at a day care facility on Baymeadows Road.
The Health Department said only one case has been confirmed so far, and the day care, La Petite Academy, will not have to close down.
The bacterial infection causes fever, diarrhea and stomach cramps.
The mother of the child diagnosed with shigella said she removed her child from the day care.
A spokeswoman for La Petite Academy said families are being notified and asked to keep home any children exhibiting symptoms of shigella until they have been symptom-free for 24 hours.
“We will be working closely with the health department and following their guidance to help prevent the spread of this illness, including taking additional precautions with sanitation,” Lydia Cisaruk said. “Our teachers will be especially cautious as they continue to follow the universal precautions for hand washing and when interacting with the children. We’ll update families with any additional guidance from the health department. We appreciate their partnership as we prioritize health and safety and our school.”
