CSX agrees to pay fine for a Virginia train derailment

Proposed $361,000 fine

A train hauling crude oil derailed and exploded in West Virginia, displacing up to 1,000 residents and contaminating the local water supply. One person was injured. Nobody was killed.

CSX has agreed to pay a fine for a Virginia train derailment.  It happened on February 17th.

The train was carrying crude oil and exploded, displacing residents and threatening the local water supply.

More than 29,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into a river during the derailment .

Now the state of Virginia proposed a $361,000 fine against Jacksonville based CSX.

The settlement still has to be approved by the State Water Control Board.  The public has until March 25th to submit public comments regarding the order. 

CSX says its continuing to work to make sure there are no lasting effects on the environment or the community.
