Men, women speak out on sexual violence

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, men and women of Jacksonville came together Thursday to reaffirm their commitment to end sexual violence in northeast Florida.

The Women's Center of Jacksonville, along with numerous social service and victim-serving agencies, met at Hemming Plaza downtown for what they called a community speak-out.

"Our women, men and children are not safe as long as there's a perpetrator out there with a will stronger than the force to stop it. We must be that force," one speaker said.

Statistics show one in nine Florida women are victims of rape, but less than 40 percent of those are reported.

The speak-out is one in a series of events the Women's Center has organized. To find out about the other events, go to WomensCenterOfJax.org.
