Sexual predator sentenced to civil confinement

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 50-year-old sexual predator has been sentenced to indefinite confinement at the Florida Civil Commitment Center in Arcadia.

Edward Cummings has spent the last six years at the sexual predator facility.

In 1984, Cummings was convicted on a charge of committing a lewd act in the presence of a child. He received a two-and-a-half-year sentence and three years of probation for the crime.

In 1989, Cummings was found guilty of lewd, lascivious or indecent act upon a minor child. In this case, Cummings inappropriately touched two young girls, ages 5 and 8, while the girls climbed a fence. He was sentenced to seven years in prison.

In 1999, Cummings was convicted again on the same charge after evidence showed he inappropriately touched a 7-year-old girl. He received one year in jail and two years of sex offender probation.

Cummings violated his probation in 2001. He also failed to register as a sex offender numerous times.

After a civil trial regarding his release, a jury decided Wednesday afternoon to send Cummings back to the commitment facility.
