JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Semi trucks are rolling north from Jacksonville with relief for the victims of super storm Sandy.
One truck is sitting in front of City Hall with Winn Dixie plastered on the side.
"I did get a call last week from Mayor Brown asking if Winn Dixie could help with food drive. The answer was simple. Yes, we'd be happy to," said Winn Dixie and Bi-Lo CEO, Randall Onstead.
"There are people who need help and today I'm proud to announce a local based effort to do just that," said Mayor Alvin Brown.
The City of Jacksonville has partnered with Winn Dixie and the Duval County School Board to collect non-perishable food and supplies through Veteran's Day to send to the hundreds of thousands of victims of Superstorm Sandy.
"I see a food drive as a welcome expansion of the mission to stand together and stand strong at a time help is needed," said Mayor Brown.
Channel 4 also reported about the Ortega United Methodist Church's food and supply drive last week. By the end of the drive, the group could barely fit everything they collected in the truck.
"Sunday, last night at 6:00 we closed the doors on the truck, and it was full. I pulled up this morning and people had dropped off more and we crammed that in, It took off around 10:30 this morning," said Pastor Mike Hudson.
Hudson said as soon as people saw the word of a place to donate on Channel 4 people came from all over northeast Florida looking to help.
"People care. People want to show love. To be able to say you're not on your own. We're one nation under God," said Hudson.
