Deputies were called to the couples' home on Cherry Lane about 11 p.m. in reference to a report of an attempted suicide. At the time, it appeared Norman had shot herself in the neck with a .22 caliber rifle, deputies said.

Investigators said Canales was initially arrested and charged with child neglect after deputies found three loaded firearms in the vicinity of the children's bedroom. Further investigation revealed that Canales shot Norman and failed to call 911 after the incident, deputies said.

Canales was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, person injured and delayed medical treatment, and tampering with a victim. Canales is being held at the Flagler County Detention Facility without bond.

The children were not harmed during the incident and Norman sustained non-life-threatening injuries, deputies said.
