Convicted Navy veteran who received child porn sentenced

US attorneys: Richard Brooks sentenced to nearly 8 years in prison

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 55-year-old man has been sentenced to seven years, 11 months in federal prison on five counts of receiving child pornography over the Internet and one count of possessing child pornography, U.S. attorneys said.

A federal jury found Richard Brooks guilty after a three-day trial in June 2014, authorities said.

At trial, the government presented evidence that law enforcement officials had identified Brooks while investigating people allegedly sharing child pornography via a peer-to-peer file-sharing program in May 2012.

Law enforcement obtained a search warrant for Brooks's Jacksonville home and discovered several computers containing child pornography, U.S. attorneys said.

Agents discovered that Brooks had received at least 49 still images and 78 video files of child pornography, including depictions of prepubescent minors and child pornography material portraying sadistic and masochistic conduct, and depictions of violence, according to U.S. attorneys.

Brooks requested a sentence of five years imprisonment, the lowest available sentence under the law, in light of his 20-year military career and his lack of criminal history, according to court documents.

The court also ordered Brooks to forfeit a computer he had used in the commission of the offenses, U.S. attorneys said.
