Teenage thief caught on home surveillance arrested

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 16-year-old who was captured on home surveillance video taking a package from a family's front doorstep is charged with burglary to a dwelling, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

It happened Tuesday at a home in the Shirley Oaks Subdivision off New Berlin Road on the Northside. The video shows two people pull up in a blue pickup truck. The burglar, who police later found was a teenager, was seen walking up to the home's front porch where he finds the package.

He's then seen walking back to the truck to put on a mask. He comes back, grabs the box and takes off.

"It was just kind of shocking to see what we saw. Clear as day," the homeowner said. "You could just never imagine that you are going to actually witness something like that happen to you."

The thieves likely weren't aware of what was inside the box, which turned out to be Science Diet dog food.

"I'm sure he was quite disappointed when he got down the road and tore the box open to find that," the homeowner said.

In addition to burglary, he was also charged with wearing a mask in public with intent to commit a crime. News4Jax is not naming the 16-year-old or showing his booking photo since he is a juvenile charged with a non-violent crime.
