First timer preparing for The Players

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Some of the top golfers are preparing for the first round of the competition of The Players, which starts Thursday.

Harold Varner III is new to the tournament. He grew up in Akron, OH. He's been playing golf since he was about two-years-old.

"My dad got me started. Kind of been hooked... never got big enough to play football or any other sport like that -- so just kind of fell into golf and I got really good at it," said The Players rookie Harold Varner III.

Varner says he's looking forward to the opportunity to play and ready to hit the green. He says he listens to music, listening to everything, but techno, while he practices.

Varner didn't watch much golf when he was younger, and says he still doesn't catch the game on TV.

He describes his competitors as cool men, but says everyone mostly sticks to themselves.

"I just want to go do my thing. I think I can play well here," said Varner.

Varner will first tee off at 2:09 p.m. Thursday.
