Arlington house fire caused by arson, fire marshal says

JSO: Homeowner's daughter lit sleepingbag on fire in bathroom

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The state fire marshal confirmed Wednesday that a fire at a home in Arlington was an act of arson.

The fire at the home on Tacony Drive, north of Merrill Road, started in one of the bathrooms about 5 a.m. after the homeowner's daughter, who suffers from schizophrenia, sprayed accelerant on a sleeping bag, lit it on fire in a bathroom, then ran, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The 10 or 11 people, including 8 children, in the home at the time all made it out safely, and no injuries were reported, officials said.

Aletha Hall, the homeowner, told News4Jax that she's thankful all of her family members are safe.

"Everyone's under control," Hall said.

The home suffered minor fire damage and moderate smoke damage.
