Families needed to care for shelter animals during Hurricane Matthew

Jacksonville Humane Society asking for 'Storm Troopers' to host sleepovers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Humane Society needs families to host shelter dogs and cats during Hurricane Matthew. The organization is hoping to keep as many of their adoptable animals in a safe, indoor environment rather than in outdoor kennels.

The Humane Society is closing its doors tomorrow at noon, October 6, and are asking families to serve as “Storm Troopers.” You can host one of their adopatable dogs or pets starting as early as tonight until Sunday, October 9th.  This will help keeps the animals inside a home instead of their outdoor kennels.

Willing families are asked to stop by JHS, located at 8464 Beach Boulevard., anytime during its open hours of 12:00 pm to 6 p.m. today (October 5th.) You can also stop by JHS between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm tomorrow, October 6 to select a dog, cat or kitten that you think best fits your family.

Animals will then be returned on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., with some flexibility. Of course, the staff says if you fall in love with your sleepover guest, you are welcome to adopt.

“JHS is not evacuating for the storm at this time, and will take all proper measures to ensure the comfort and safety of our animals. But there’s no better way to ride out a scary storm than with a loving family. Our dogs had so much fun last time that our cats got jealous.  So, now, we’ve extended the promotion to include them as well!” said Denise Deisler, executive director of the Jacksonville Humane Society. “We are grateful that we can always count on the compassion of the Jacksonville community.”

“Storm Trooper” families are encouraged to spoil their "sleepover guests" and share pictures on social media using #JHSStormTrooper.  Of course, if you fall in love during the storm, you are welcome to adopt!

There is more information about "Storm Troopers" on the Jacksonville Humane Society's website. If you have questions, you can call 904-493-4567, email foster@jaxhumane.org or message them on their Facebook page.
