Thirty people were arrested for using the internet to sexually exploit children in Georgia and Alabama, as part of “Operation Southern Impact.”

Georgia and Alabama law enforcement coordinated for three months to find people who possess and distribute child pornography, or who exploit children in other ways using the Internet. The joint investigation culminated in two days of searches and arrests.

A total of 54 search warrants were executed in the two states. Over the course of the operation, 162 digital devices were examined, and 731 digital media devices were seized as evidence.

According to a release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, “Operation Southern Impact” gave the law enforcement agencies “an opportunity to share our experience, information, and resources across units, agencies, and state lines, to make sure that there is no safe place to hide for criminals who would victimize the most vulnerable among us.”

Those arrested in Georgia had occupations ranging from student to addiction counseling pastor to military cybersecurity personnel. As the evidence is analyzed, additional arrests may be made, officials said.
