Driver airlifted to hospital after Wednesday night crash

Driver was not wearing seat belt

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – A driver was airlifted to Shands UF in Gainesville Wednesday evening after being involved in an accident in Columbia County according to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol. 

The second vehicle in the accident, a Nissan, was facing west on SW Pinemount Road at SW Barwick Terr waiting for traffic to clear to turn left onto SW Barwick Terr. The first vehicle, a Mercedes, was traveling westbound on SW Pinemount Road approaching the Nissan from the rear. The driver of Mercedes failed to stop and hit the rear of the Nissan with its front end. The Nissan traveled across the eastbound lane of SW Pinemount Road and came to final rest on the southbound shoulder of SW Barwick Terr facing South, the release stated.

The Mercedes came to final rest in the westbound lane of SW Pinemount Road facing southwest. The driver of Mercedes was treated on scene by Century Emergency Medical Services then airlifted via Trauma One for treatment, explained the release. The driver of the Nissan did not have any injuries. 

Charges included careless driving and not wearing a seat belt.
