Driver struck by train trying to beat it

Driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man suffered minor injuries Monday afternoon when his car was hit by a slow-moving train on Commonwealth Avenue between Picketville and Imeson roads, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

At around 3:35 p.m., a man drove under a railroad-crossing arm as it began to lower, trying to beat the oncoming train, police said. The man then stopped in the middle of the tracks and tried to back up when he was hit by a CSX train, police said.

The man was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The man’s car was removed by a city-contracted wrecker service.
