Distressed manatee spotted in Julington Creek

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A young manatee showing signs of cold stress was spotted Thursday in Julington Creek.

News4Jax photographer Fernanda Ponce shot video Thursday morning from Clark’s Fish Camp of the young manatee, which was about 4 feet long.

The manatee had white coloring around its mouth, which is an indicator of cold stress.

It was seen at the surface, where it was trying to absorb the heat of the sun.

The video was sent to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.

FWC did a brief search to see if the manatee needed to be rescued but couldn't locate it.

Anyone who sees the manatee is asked to call 1-888-404-3922.
