United Pet Group is recalling multiple brands of rawhide dog chews that were sold nationwide because they may be contaminated with a chemical used to clean food processing equipment.
According to the company's recall notice, rawhide chew plants located in Mexico, Colombia and Brazil used an ammonium compound as a processing aid that’s approved for cleaning food processing equipment. However, it hasn't been approved in this country for use in making dog rawhide chews.

The chemical can cause reduced appetite, vomiting and diarrhea, if ingested by dogs. Depending on the severity, these symptoms may require treatment by a veterinarian.
The recall includes the following products:
- American Beefhide - Only products with lot codes listed on the back of the package that start with AH and which list expiration dates from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020 are affected by this recall.
- Digest-eeze - Only products with lot codes listed on the back of the package that start with AH, AV, A, AI, AO, or AB, and which list expiration dates from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020 are affected by this recall.
- Healthy Hide (including Healthy Hide Good -n- Fun and Healthy Hide Good -n- Fit) - Only products with lot codes listed on the back of the package that start with AH, AV, A, AI, AO, or AB and which list expiration dates from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020 are affected by this recall.
"We take our responsibility to pets and their owners seriously and we are continuing to investigate the cause of this problem," United Pet Group said in a statement. "We are implementing changes across the affected manufacturing facilities in order to prevent this problem from reoccurring in the future."
