The Lawtey Police Department said Jordan's family has opted to have a private service, but is inviting all friends and family to a celebration of life gathering at the Tatum Brothers Park at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9. Covered dishes are welcome and appreciated.
Jordan began his law enforcement career in Starke, about 7 miles south of Lawtey in 1961. Just over a year later, he became the sole police officer in Lawtey.
Over the years, as Lawtey grew, he became chief of a department that at one point had 11 officers. Lawtey, along with the city of Waldo, became notorious for speed-ticket quotas and were named speed traps by AAA.
Waldo's police department was disbanded in 2015 and Lawtey cut its department in half.
