Speed bumps needed to stop dangerous drivers, Northside neighbors say

Residents on Ken Knight Drive say drivers speed while children cross street

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – When drivers speeding down Ken Knight Drive on Jacksonville's Northside were caught on camera, residents said that there is a serious need for the city to install speed bumps.

After hearing complaints about speeding, News4Jax went to that block in the Ribault neighborhood with a radar gun Tuesday. The speed limit sign clearly reads, "15 mph," but cars were clocked going more than 30 mph while children were crossing the street.

News4Jax confronted one of the drivers about speeding in the area.

“First of all, I didn’t see the speed limit," the driver said. "I wouldn’t hit a kid.”

Neighbors who live along Ken Knight Drive said speeding is happening too often, and speed bumps need to be put in place before a child is hurt or killed.

“I constantly see people speeding through here and we have kids that ride their bicycle or (are) crossing a street," parent Linda Bennett said.

Bennett told News4Jax she's seen several close calls recently.

"More than five or six seriously, where they have to jam on their brakes," she said.

Neighbors said the speeding cars are a tragedy waiting to happen, and there is only one true solution to the problem: speed bumps.

“They speed through here like they’re on a race track somewhere," said neighbor Eleanor Patrick. “I think speed bumps. We need some speed bumps.”

Jacksonville City Councilwoman Katrina Brown represents the area. News4Jax has reached out to her office via email and phone over the last several days to see what can be done, but has not yet received a response.
