Police: Human skull found in near St. Augustine Winn-Dixie

No other remains found during search of area, investigators say

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A human skull was found last week by a surveyor crew working near a Winn-Dixie store, the St. Augustine Police Department said Monday.

The discovery was made about 4 p.m. Wednesday in an area behind the Winn-Dixie on North Ponce de Leon Boulevard, just south of Fort Mose Trail, police said. There are a couple of homeless camps in the woods behind that store.

Investigators with the Police Department, who were assisted by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office and a cadaver dog, searched the area, but officers said no additional remains were recovered.

The skull was sent to a forensic anthropologist.

Police said it's still an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective M. Ochkie with the Police Department at 904-209-3485. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-8477.
