JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was hospitalized Monday afternoon after a shooting at a Mandarin condominium complex, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
He is expected to be OK.
Jacksonville police were called to the Mandarin Glen Condos on Ricky Drive, east of San Jose Boulevard, around 1:10 p.m.
Detectives said a man in his 20s was found shot in a grassy area of the condo parking lot. They said he was shot on the property and that a person of interest was taken into custody.
The victim was taken to Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said they will be checking surveillance video at the complex and talking with witnesses.
Christine Cranford, a resident of the condo complex, told News4Jax she had just returned home when she heard the unthinkable as she got out of her minivan.
"I heard two loud shots," Cranford said. "Everybody in the pool was running away from the pool, and I didn’t know where the shots were coming from so I sat down by my car."
That's when she said she spotted the victim, who was bleeding from his chest but still conscious, and called 911.
"He was crying. He was hollering," Cranford said. "I went over and talked to him and made him be still. The girlfriend was there and she said they were fighting and the other guy went and got a gun."
Sally Stork, who lives outside the condo complex, said she never would have imagined gun violence in the quiet neighborhood.
"You hear about it every day, but it's just crazy that something would happen across the street," Stork said.
Crimes are rarely reported in the area. According to JSO's crime-mapping tool, within a 1-mile radius of the condos in the last month there has been only:
- 1 burglary
- 5 assaults
- 1 vehicle break-in
- 18 thefts
