Pampers says goodbye to Sesame Street characters

Changes have nothing to do with gender equality, spokesperson says

Say goodbye to Elmo, Big Bird and the Cookie Monster: the iconic "Sesame Street" characters will no longer appear on Pampers diapers.

But a spokesperson for Procter & Gamble, which makes the diapers, said the decision has nothing to do with gender equality, contrary to a report suggesting otherwise.

“The story speculating on our decision to make graphic changes based on gender is inaccurate,” spokesperson Laura Dressman told PEOPLE in a statement.

The statement comes after a New York Post report that indicated the characters were dropped in response to parents' complaints that there were too many male characters featured.
