A man and two children were rescued from the ocean Saturday near Butler Beach

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A man died at Flagler Hospital Sunday, the day after he and two children were rescued from the ocean near the beach access at Atlantic View and Redick Lane, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said.

Rescue crews were called to the beach about 11:30 a.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a distressed man with two children in the water, officials said.

The children were safely returned to shore, but the man disappeared from sight after being last seen by other swimmers.

Aviation, marine and beach patrol units, who had been searching for another man who disappeared in the surf several days ago in South Ponte Vedra Beach, responded and were able to recover the 47-year-old man from the water a short time later.

Responders began life-saving measures before the man was taken to Flagler Hospital for advanced care, where he later died, officials said.
